This blog post is about Cape Town day trips. Whether you hire a car or a pay a company to help you with it, but you should definitely not stay only in Cape Town, but explore the surroundings as well because, trust me, there is plenty to see.
Buckle up, buttercup, we will take you on a ride.
Camp´s Bay
Have you ever seen the Californian beaches and the road with palm trees? Well, this might be little California to you. Long beach with palm trees, magnificent views and many options for food. I would just warn you from the water temperature as it is an Atlantic ocean the water is super cold and i mean super damn cold. When the wind starts blowing from the mountains it can be pretty ruff, people getting sandblasted, umbrellas flying in the air. We had only one out of two days, which were perfect for the beach.
For food try KAUAI - suitable even for vegans, or a restaurant above the street for a great beach view called Bilboa restaurant.
When it gets too windy, hit the road and go for a short hike (ruffly 45mins) to Lion´s head. The views are amazing and it is free, not like Table mountain. We do not recommend it to small children, people with a fear of heights and people who have movement disability.
Boulders beach
Who would not like awesome beaches and cute animals? If you think this is a bit off the topic, bare with me. Boulders beach is known for the penguin colony, yes you read it correctly, where you can see them in their natural habitat - no zoo nor captivity, they come and go as they please. You walk through this beach park on a wooden path and you can see them coming out of the water, laying on eggs, playing with each other and so on.
The second entrance, a little bit further down the road you enter a true paradise. The beach there looks like Seychelles and you can get really close to the penguins. You can lay there, chilling and you might have a penguin run around you. It is truly a priceless experience.
Just please realize, that you are only a visitor in their home - act accordingly.
Hermanus
Hermanus is a seaside town, that is well known for whale watching. You can visit several sights such as the old harbour, a fishermen’s village and the Whale House Museum, with some real whale bones, just to imagine the size of this creature. The whale watching season is between June and December. There are whale-watching cruises as well as simple kayaks to be borrowed. Visit local markets for some craftmanship and then go for food on the best spot. The restaurant's name is Bientang's Cave Restaurant and it is situated right by the ocean on the cliff. It is so beautiful and their meal is fresh and tasty. We loved it.
Cape point
The most south-western point and i would add the windiest place! It is considered to be a national park and therefore you have to pay for the entry. You take a funicular to the lighthouse, visit the small museum with the facts and tales about the place - like the Flying Dutchman, which is still by this day "being seen" floating around the coast - and then walk to the ruins of the old lighthouse right by the tip. Or take the beautiful wooden path to Dias Beach. An incredible almost white beach, surrounded by cliffs looking into the ruff see. Truly incredible as not many people want to walk it and so you might be there alone.
Careful on the baboons (monkeys) that love to steal.
Wine routes
There is simply a lot of wine routes around Cape Town and we visited only two. We could literally next time go to explore only these.
Spice Route in Paarl is like a little village in our area. You have stores with glass here (you can see people making it) restaurant with a grill, ice-cream store, chocolate tasting, beer tasting, playground for kids and amazing views.
Another place we went to and is very famous is called Spier. Unfortunately, we were here after dawn and so i do not have any outdoor photos for you, but it is a beautiful estate in colonial style (like the majority of them), there is, of course, wine tasting, farm kitchen, bakery, beautiful pond with the most insane sounds, amphitheatre and what we loved the most is a little store with goodies AND you can hire a basket full of good food and wine and go to sit down anywhere in the property and enjoy a lovely pick-nick.
